West Bend- Curtis J. Schmidt, 68, a well known funeral director and owner was sentenced to serve 15 years in a state prison for what will end a long history of sexual assault, soliciting sex from children on the computer, and having pictures of minors in sexual situations.
Curtis J. Schmidt, 68, met a Colorado boy which was 13-years old in an online chat room and told him in an e-mail that he wanted to have sex with him.
Schmidt plead no contest in June to five counts of possessing child pornography, one count of child sexploitation and exposing a child to harmful material. Another 15 counts against him were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
According to court documents the boy's mother turned them over to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, VA., which in turn contacted the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation.
Agents raided Schmidt's home and family business, Schmidt's Funeral Home, 629 Cedar St, located in West Bend. They seized computer equipment, computer disks and other materials containing images of child pornography and sexually explicit e-mails.
During the pre-sentence investigation the history of Schmidt included that he sexually assaulted two nephews, one of which ended up committing suicide because of the assault. In the 1970's and 1980's a construction crew also unearthed photographs while working in Schmidts home.
Those pictures included images of children engaging in sex with adult men and pictures of the genitals of corpses.
