Trial set in sex assault case of Milwaukee police officer

Milwaukee-

Circuit Judge Jeffrey Wagner ruled Nov. 6 that Milwaukee police officer Steven Lelinski, 42, will go on trial in Milwaukee and the jury will not be sequestered.

Lelinski is charged with the sexual assaults of three women he met while on duty. Lelinski, who was charged in February and fired from the Milwaukee Police Dept. in August, had been an officer for 16 years. He faces up to 80 years in prison, if convicted.

Prosecutors have made allegations that Lelinski assaulted six other women, but that their cases are old and cannot be prosecuted. Wagner has yet to decide on a motion to throw out the allegations of one of the six women. Lelinski's attorney, Steven Kohn, alleges that the woman has similarly accused another officer and a sheriff's deputy in the past. According to Assistant District Attorney Miriam Falk, the rape shield law prevents addressing that information at trial.

The pre-trial is scheduled to take place on Jan. 9, and the trial will follow on Jan. 29.
