Sheboygan man sent to mental hospital for setting apartment fire

Craig- NewsInMilwaukee

Sheboygan- A 25-year-old Sheboygan man was committed to a mental institution for 12 years after confessing to setting fire to a Plymouth apartment building.

Brian A. Schiller was sentenced earlier this month after being found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect on a charge of felony arson, according to records released Tuesday in Sheboygan County Circuit Court.

Schiller had confessed in January to setting a 2001 fire to a two-family building where his cousin lived. He said he set the fire after he argued with his cousin while they were out drinking. No one was injured in the fire, which caused $11,000 worth of damage to the building, according to court records.

Schiller's mother, Deborah Streblow, wrote a letter to the court saying he had a history of mental illness, had been committed briefly before and had threatened her life. "I'm hoping this will finally be the opportunity for him to get the help he needs," she wrote, "while also paying the consequences for any crime he has committed."
