Investigation of Hunter's Murder

Craig- NewsInMIlwaukee

Green Bay- An acquaintance described the man held in connection with the death of a Hmong hunter as polite and helpful, but something of a loner.

James Nichols, 28, was arrested after he arrived at a hospital Saturday with a single non-life threatening gunshot wound. The same day, authorities discovered the body of Cha Vang, 30, of Green Bay, in the Peshtigo Harbor Wildlife Area.

Vang had been reported missing the night before. His death came little more than a year after another Hmong immigrant was sentenced to life in prison for killing six and injuring two white hunters in November 2004.

Chai Soua Vang, 38, claimed he shot the white hunters after one fired a shot in his direction and they shouted racial epithets and cursed at him. The case exposed racial tensions in northwestern Wisconsin.
