Teacher pleads not guilty in child sex case

ST. FRANCIS - A 26-year-old teacher in St. Francis is charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old male student. Kelly Sweet teaches 8th grade math at Deer Creek Intermediate School. She pleaded not guilty Thursday to the sexual assault charge. She is free on signature bond. A criminal complaint accuses Sweet of having sexual contact with the boy at her Milwaukee apartment. The boy is a student at her school, but it is unclear if he is a student in Sweet's classroom.

It says the two were watching a movie and "she was lying on the sofa with her head on his lap." That allegedly led to kissing and sexual touching. Sweet's next court appearance is April 3. If convicted, she could face $100,000 in fines or up to 40 years in prison. Parents say that Sweet has been suspended, but school officials have not confirmed that. Parents are concerned that the St. Francis School District did not send a letter home to parents. Many heard about it from their kids.
